EQUINE DENTISTRY.

Internationally renowned Equine Dentist – Gary Khakhian – gave an absolutely fascinating talk to an appreciative audience and provided a valuable insight into the many aspects of dentistry affecting equines: from the sports horse right through to the equine veteran.

Clearly Equine Dentistry is one of the most important, yet often overlooked, health practices that we can provide for our horses. We learned that if it’s done properly, it can lead to balanced body functions that may improve performance, health and even prolong life. But poor equine dentistry can lead to increased pain, contribute to lameness - and lead to neurological imbalance…with a host of negative ramifications.

Gary is one of the most experienced equine dentists in the world – and a founding member of the Worldwide Association of Equine Dentistry (WWAED) set up to maintain standards in Equine Dentistry. The WWAED is now approved by the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and the Department for the Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Gary is the association’s lead examiner for DEFRA – and for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Approved Level 2 and Entrance examinations.

The audience was captivated as Gary guided us through dental anatomy and the dental issues that can lead to problems influencing the performance, health - and quality of life of the equine.

Following many years in practice, Gary has a huge depth of experience with  a wide range of customers including top competition riders: from the worlds of dressage, eventing, show-jumping, racing and endurance; equine charities and sanctuaries – and a large clientele of leisure owners. In his mind, every horse deserves to be “happy and healthy” whether it’s an elite athlete or a ‘happy hacker’.

During the course of the evening Gary demonstrated that equine dentistry not only influences and affects the overall health of a horse, but that it can also play such an important role in a horse's athletic performance.
